Right now you are playing in your play pen, a bit fussy as you struggle to get where you want to go. You are frustrated, that unlike in your crib, you cannot just grab a slat and pull yourself to a standing position. That is your favorite thing to do over the last several days. You have a knot on the back of your head and a large bruise over your eye as battle scars. Hopefully no one reports your father and I to CPS.
You are sleepy. I fondly remember the days (like week before last) when I could put you in your crib at night and you would just roll around until you fell asleep. Now, you fancy yourself an escape artist, and your crib seems to be the place you least want to be. Your dad and I don't think you can actually get out (we have already lowered the mattress once), but there is now physical evidence that you can hurt yourself trying.
Last night Mimi kept you while your Dad and I went to dinner, it was the most pleasant surprise to come home to a sleeping baby at 9pm when we were expecting to come home and fight with you for a few hours to get you to sleep. Mimi said she utilized the Grandjackie method to get you to sleep. That means she held you really tightly in your rocking chair despite your kicks, fusses and arm wailing, until you finally calmed down and fell asleep. Then she rocked you for an additional twenty minutes until she was sure you were asleep. Then she held her breath as she stood up and moved you to your crib, praying you would not wake up. Then she tiptoed out of your room, still holding her breath, hesitant to declare victory until several minutes after departing. I know these details well, because I just did the same, and now you are napping.
Friday night you were up until almost 11. Zac and Callye were over and I think you were just terrified you might miss some fun. Zac said watching you try to break out of your crib on the baby monitor was more entertaining than anything on television.
You had your picture taken yesterday. We tried all day to get you to nap so you would be well rested, and of course you finally fell asleep fifteen minutes before it was time to go. But you slept in the car and managed to, as usual, ham it up for the camera. I know there will be good pictures of you, but I am hoping we got a few good family shots as well.
You are still working on crawling. The tile floor in the den is too slick for you right now, but on carpet you get up on your hands and knees, rock back and forth, move one arm and leg forward and then fall onto your stomach and army crawl wherever you want to go. Zac was quite impressed with your upper body strength.
You also love playing in your play pen. Some days you will play independently in there for 45 minutes at a time. You read your books, toss around your blocks and snuggle your stuffed animals. I love the playpen, because I feel that you are much safer in it than the crib. If only you would sleep in there.
You continue to be such a blessing and a joy to your father and me. Your dad got you to repeat "hi daddy" a few times yesterday. I try to get you to say "mama" and you smile at me and respond "dada". You reveal your personality to us a little more each day - I wake up in the mornings wondering what surprises you have in store for us. We cannot wait until you can communicate and express what is going on in that little head of yours. We also see more and more of an independent streak in you - you like to put the pacifier in your mouth yourself, you hate being made to lie down on the changing table (or anywhere for that matter) and you seem to always know what you are after. You also love being the center of attention. You have been waking up during the bible study we host at our house and entering into the discussion with squeals. You cannot understand why we would have a bunch of people at our house, not here specifically to admire you. I pray that certain aspects of your personality will remain with you always, especially your cheerful disposition and intense enthusiasm.
Love, Mom
